Just what I needed At first glance, this is your standard pretense plot, with Jeremy Piven pretending to be a screenwriter instead of the hollywood tour bus operator he really is - just so he can get close to Sherilyn Fenn, who plays a hollywood starlet. The movie runs deeper than that, a debt perhaps owed to Sunset Boulevard, which is overtly referenced at least twice in the film. Before the pretense wears out, the script throws in idiot plot elements to keep things moving, but there is heart underneath these standard plot devices. It's hard to be original, so this can forgiven as well as the dopey, but thankfully short, chase sequence at the end, but I wish I could rate Just Write a little higher.
