A little Back & Forth Shorts can get away with a lot of things, pulling in all kinds of unconventional techniques to tell a story, or even just set a mood, as story can be very loosely defined or even ignored.
Fits & Starts is organized like a conversation. We begin on a couch. A man and a woman take turns playing their lines through tape recorders. From there, we move to wilder and wilder moments, but always with this escalating give-and-take between the characters. This short is darn clever and damn funny. Doing a feature with this material would be nearly impossible (though an interesting challenge in my mind). If people can keep thinking up shorts like this, there's no reason (other than whatever economic interest is in those trailers and ads we see now) to clear room to show these at the start of a film.
