A True Classic
This movie probably has more myth, history, and reverence than any other I can think of. It's hard to watch this movie and not be aware of the cultural wake stretched out behind it.
A short synopsis - Kane is the inheriter of the 6th largest personal fortune in the world. Restless, sharp as a tack, and driven, Kane charges through the newspaper world creating and breaking his own rules. Can he balance power, wealth, and love?
This movie has so many recognizable scenes that were likely invented by Welles and his team. It is grandiose in scale and scope. Inventive in it's cinematograhpy (even 60+ years later) and brillantly edited.
Welles delivers as an actor, writer, director, and producer of the movie. With his co-writer, they find a way to reduce a man's life to a few simple words uttered on his death bed. What do they mean? How was his life shaped by his events? Welles deftly folds in the psychological profiling that was relatively new at the time. We see Kane abandoned as a boy and rebellious, wounded, and smarmy because of it. We see his quest for love and understanding through a series of women that he gradually pushes away from his life. We see him surrounding himself with materials and collections to fill the void his charge through life has created.
