Emotions in check and in action I saw In The Bedroom at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, and this review is reconstructed from my notes. I felt that the title is somewhat misleading, and pretty poorly chosen given that what it refers to is a peripheral aspect of a plot point (albeit an important one). But titles are hard and as I think about it, I can't think of a better one. In the end, the title only is something used to get people in the theater - the film itself doesn't suffer from it, unless you get disappointed because of your expectations.
I particularly don't want to give out the plot on this one, and you'll have to see it to figure out why. This is one of those small films that work because it isn't trying to be bigger than it is. The pacing is slow in the first act, but it does its job to prepare the audience for what is to come - which is simply the emotional space for the characters to express themselves. This film was up for the Sundance audience award, and I gave this film a 4 (out of 5), counting off mainly for some weakness in that first act.
