The Big Hat Black Robe was released around the time of Dances with Wolves and some of the other American Indian centric fare of the day. Black Robe probably has more in common with the Mission than it does the other films. We are dropped into New France (Canada) where the Jesuits are departing for their Huron mission where they hope to convert the savages.
Yes, the plot centers around the clash of cultures and the nobility of the North American Indian. No, it is not patronizing. If you have seen the Mission, this film will be familiar. If you haven't, and you are older then 15, you probably have already thought about the deeper messages. It's choppier than I remember at first, but once the narrative begins, it is a good story.
