An odd threesome...
Recently, I've watched three movies - O, The Bourne Identity, and The Shipping News. Not thematically related, these movies have made me think about the screenplay. Taking an idea inherited from someone else and transferring it to film.
The Bourne Identity is based on a book from Robert Ludlum. Ludlum acts as excutive producer, so we can guess that he had some hand in the transformation from book to screen. This movie is not based on the more faithful TV adapation with Richard Chamberlin.
I read this book when I was fourteen-ish. A long time ago. I don't think I completed the other two in the trilogy. The short version, I'm not sure I could go over the plot of the novel in much detail. It's been too long. So a strange feeling came over me while I was watching this adaptation. I felt like I had my own version of amnesia. 'Did that happen in the book?' 'Was that character in the novel?'
The movie stars Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. A man pulled from the ocean and not sure of his past. Outside of the common start and that Jason Bourne is CIA, the novel and my recollection of the novel depart dramatically. In the novel, Bourne is trying to kill Carlos - a world reknowned terrorist, figure out who he is, and avoid being brought in by the CIA. In the movie, it's just the last two - the search for his past and avoiding being caught. It's strange to see how much of the detail has been 'updated' for a new generation. In this case, updated should suggest wholesale changeout.
Typical summer movie fair. Not much else going on. The supporting cast is quirky as a whole.
