Go Amy, Go Amy! I like Amy Heckerling. Clueless has a special place in my heart because it's one of those films that actually surprised me out of left field. And Fast Times at Ridgemont High doesn't hurt either. I bring this up for a reason - Loser was written and directed by Amy, and hey, it has something to do with my review
Loser didn't get universal glowing reviews. It mentions reruns of "My So-Called Life" (another plus). The thing about Clueless was, it was very accessible, which could be considered a reason to dis it, but it's just one aspect of a film and that's all. Loser is a deeper, and requires more emotional investment in the characters. This is your typical simple uncomplicated loser does best he can, suffers considerably, and is proven out in the end kind of story. It has future American Pie stars Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari as the leads. Mena is actually pretty attractive in this movie, unlike the caricature she seems to be in other films. Perhaps it's not a secret so far that I like Loser. Maybe it's something to do with my own personal perspectives on life or some such shit. I know it's a little predictable, perhaps a lot predictable, and has the sentimental ending. I don't care, I just like what I see. "Did you know cranberry juice is good for your urinary tract?" I can totally see certain scenes that were ADR'd, but hey, poor sound conditions, what can you do? Some of the jokes fall completely flat. It's not critical, really. David Spade's little cameo - not deep, but probably better than the entire length of Joe Dirt... "Have you ever considered falling in love, and leaving off the 'madly' part?" "Where's the fun in that?" I don't know, maybe people won't relate the way I will/do. But, the point of review is to relate my point of view, so hey, I like it!
