If you must see a Julia Roberts film Julia Roberts was given the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in this movie. I don't really think hers was the most deserving performance among the nominees, but out of all the movies she's done, or is likely to do anytime soon, this is the one where it might actually make sense.
Steven Soderburgh has given this rough-hewn tale of a legal battle with a huge corporation a very seventies feel, even though the actual events that inspired it took place in the early nineties. That's strangely given the film a more authentic feel, as if we can accept things more readily if they took place long ago. There's actually quite a few great moments, funny ones, sentimental ones, and triumphant ones. This really is a pretty good film.
