Odd I'm not sure what this movie is trying to be. At one point it feels like a period piece somewhere after the Victorians (it's supposed to be set in 1950's[?]). In another moment, it feels like a chick-flick. Then, the last third of the movie focuses on a gypsy group and an oddball love afair (with Johnny Depp).
Two films that may be of some interest are Like Water for Chocolate and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. It's been a long time since I've seen either, but Like Water for Chocoloate is a gorgeous movie that succeeds in portrayal of food and the ties to family, history, and sensuality. The Unbearable Lightness of Being also showcases Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche - but I found it to be very touching and quite enjoyable. Chocolat is not insulting or frustrating, it just never moves far enough in one direction.
