Raucous Fun

Baz Luhrmann's first film was a strong indicator of what was to come - his fascination with the proscenium arch and the furious, MTV-style of pacing and editing. When the film takes a moment for the characters to breathe, we breathe with them and those moments are able to mean so much more. Much of what happens here is simply ludicrous, but it works because of the pacing and because it never puts more significance into those happenings than they deserve. Simply put, rolicking fun.
