Guy Goes B Movie Guy Maddin may be an acquired taste, but as a stylist he draws upon so many elements we are probably already familiar with. The Forbidden Room is a fever dream of B movies from the '50s and '60s in a set of nested frame stories. Like much of Madden's work, it isn't meant to be coherent or particularly understandable in a traditional way. What you get is a set of impressions... and a PSA on how to take a bath.
It doesn't seem right to give a rating to a Maddin film - comparison against the majority of films is near nonsense. Instead I rate The Forbidden Room as a continuing evolution of Guy Maddin's intense visual style.
