What a travesty!!!

I am so upset that I saw this film.

I am a huge Harry Potter fan and have both of the first two on DVD - we watch them often. However I very much doubt I will by getting this film and I don’t intend to see any further films in the series.

What were they thinking? It is obvious that the filmmakers did not watch the first two films, and they must have hoped that their audiences hadn’t either.

** Spoilers Follow **

First things first – most of us knew that Dumbledore would change as the wonderful Richard Harris (who played him in the first two films) sadly died in 2002. But the new Dumbledore is not even a pale imitation – it is a reinterpretation that owes more to the bumbling Dr Watson in the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films than to anything penned by J.K. Rowling. The strange thing is that I have always been a bit of a Michael Gabon fan – no more so!!

More shocking is the change to Hogwarts – what has happened?? Is it supposed to be the same place? Some of the distant shots look similar, but everything else is different. The only room that has escaped pretty much unchanged is the defence against the dark arts lecture hall – but everything else from the great hall (now not so great an with obviously not enough room for the four tables) to Hagrid’s hut (itself basically unchanged, but now at the bottom of a hill below the new “main entrance to the school which has gained a long wooden footbridge that we have never met before in film or book. Also the entrance now sports a huge clock with a pendulum that swings back and forth behind the great doors.

We all know where the Gryffindor common room is don’t we… But not any more!!! It now comes directly off the main staircase – through a totally different portrait of the unfortunately cast Dawn French….

There was even a bizarre moment when Professor Lupin gave Harry private tuition in his rooms, but rather than being those attached to the defence against the dark arts hall, as used by Lockhart in The Chamber of Secrets, his rooms are in fact those used by Dumbledore in that film.

There is much, much, more (like the flying dementors and everyone no longer wearing school uniform!!) but I just can’t bring myself to remember this film any more….

Just don’t go and see it – you will regret it if you do!!!
